Warner Media signs HBO Max distribution agreement with Roku
Warner Media announced that they closed a deal with Roku and Sony. This deal will put HBO Max on all Roku devices and Sony’s Playstation 5.
With the 1984 release of Wonder Woman on HBO Max, Warner Media and Roku signed a deal that will ensure that millions of Americans can watch the movie in the comfort of their homes.
The $ 15 a month streaming service will be available on Roku devices starting December 17th.
Scott Rosenberg, senior vice president of business at Roku, said in a statement that he was “thrilled” to bring the HBO Max catalog to Roku’s more than 100 million users in the United States. “Achieving mutually beneficial agreements in which Roku grows with our partners is how we offer an exceptional user experience with incredible value for consumers and we are excited about the opportunity to deepen our longstanding relationship with the Warner Media team,” he added. .
Roku, the most widely used connected TV platform in the U.S., is the last major distributor to add HBO Max to its lineup, giving the fledgling service a much wider potential audience as it appears to grow beyond its current 12.6 million. active accounts.
When HBO Max was launched on May 27, it did so without distribution agreements with Roku and Amazon. This meant that the streamer – which is offered as a free upgrade to HBO subscribers – was not available to about 70% of connected TV users in the United States. NBCUniversal faced a similar dilemma with the launch of Peacock in July. The two sets of negotiations revolved around questions about who would control the content experience and how much advertising inventory the companies would share with Roku.
The service has been slow to gain subscribers, adding 8.6 million active accounts in the first four months. But its availability on Amazon devices and its recent lineup of programming, including HBO’s original Undoing and Anne Hathaway’s star, The Witches, boosted its momentum, helping to add 4 million new active accounts since the end of September.
Warner Media’s chief revenue officer, Tony Gonçalves, said in a statement that he was also “excited” about the deal, adding: “We are breaking new ground in the coming months and can’t wait to work with our longtime partners at Roku to build on our previous successes and bring the best quality entertainment from HBO Max to the large and highly engaged audience of Roku. “
