Johnny Nash dies at 80 – Best known for the hit “I Can See Clearly Now”

Nash, who was in poor health, died of natural causes at his home in Houston, his hometown, said his son, Johnny Nash Jr., He was 80 years old.

Nash was one of the first artists to bring reggae to the US audience. He praised “the vibrations of that small island” when speaking of Jamaica.

Johnny Nash began his career as a pop singer in the 1950s.

I Can See Clearly Now, influenced by reggae, reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 4, 1972 and stayed in No. 1 for four weeks, according to Billboard.

The song returned to the Billboard charts when it was recorded by Jamaican reggae star Jimmy Cliff for the soundtrack to the 1993 film “Cool Runnings”. Cliff’s version reached No. 11 on the Billboard charts.

According to his website, Nash was one of the first non-Jamaican singers to record reggae in Kingston, Jamaica.
