National Dog Show 2020: Claire – Scottish deerhound – wins best in show
Claire, a Scottish Deerhound, defeated hundreds of dogs on Thursday to take home the National Dog Show grand prize.
Claire was voted “Best in Show” at the event, which this year was reduced – due to Covid-19. The show featured only 600 dogs instead of the usual 2,000 – but Claire’s victory is no less significant.
“She saw a picture of the dog doing exactly what it was created to do,” said David Frei, an NBC commentator, when asked what the judges saw in Claire.
“It was perfectly built, has an active and easy walk, and is elegant in the way Sir Walter Scott had in mind when he called Deerhound the most perfect creature.”
Claire left the Hound group, defeating six other dogs that came out on top of their respective groups.
The National Dog Show, hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia, was held for two days on the 14th and 15th of November.
The show, which first aired on NBC in 2002, aired on Thanksgiving Day after Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for nearly 20 years.
What is the National Dog Show?
The National Dog Show is one of the most popular dog shows in the world. Held by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia, the show was founded in 1879 and has been held annually since 1933. The NDS is sanctioned by the American Kennel Club, and only AKC registered purebred dogs can compete. The AKC recognizes 208 breeds and varieties of dogs, divided into seven different groups.
