Two people died and six are hospitalized after shots were fired at an off-campus party near Rutgers University.

The shooting took place around 1:30 am Sunday, during a party at a house on Delafield Street, which is just half a mile away from the university campus.

It is unclear what motivated the shooting, but the Police Department at Rutgers University said in an official statement that the case is under investigation.

“In this incident, it is reported that an unknown perpetrator (s) fired several shots from a gun that hit the individuals who were present,” the document said.

“The injured were taken to a hospital in the area and the injuries are serious.”

Two men were pronounced dead at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, reports NBC New York.

The identity of the victims was not disclosed and the current condition of the six wounded was not disclosed.

So far, the preliminary investigation has not suggested that the victims or the shooting involved any affiliation with students at Rutgers University.

“Information about the description (s) of the perpetrator (s) is limited at the moment and the investigation is active and ongoing,” the authorities said. No arrests were made.
